Chondromalacia patella

Chondromalacia patella (CP) literally means softening of the cartilage on the under-surface of the kneecap. This cartilage acts a natural shock absorber and is normally very smooth.

Overuse, injury or other factors may lead to irritation, breaking down and abnormal growth of the cartilage. Grinding, creaking and pain can occur as the kneecap glides over the underlying thigh bone, which can further develop the condition.

Pain associated with CP is usually experienced as a dull ache at the front of the knee during activities such as walking up or down stairs, kneeling, squatting or sitting with a bent knee for long periods of time.
