Strain in the skull bones and surrounding tissue can have a profound influence on cognitive and behavioural functions in toddlers and children partly because of the close association of the nerves that supply the scalp tissues and those that supply several membranes that envelops the brain (meninges) and important blood vessels in the brain.

Head strains may occur in utero and persist into early childhood and/or may occur after birth most commonly due to poor postures.

Toddlers and children often do not complain about head pain, but instead display other signs and symptoms. They may look off-colour, have dark rings under their eyes, complain of a recurrent sore tummy, have recurrent illness, be emotionally sensitive, restless, withdraw, lack energy, be over active, have difficulty concentrating, and seem to not listen to name a few.

We have seen excellent outcomes in treating toddlers and children with:

  • ADD/ADHD
  • Asperger's
  • sensory processing disorder
  • asthma symptoms
  • recurrent colds and flu
  • poor concentration span
  • hyperactivity
  • withdrawal
  • childhood migraine and headaches
  • recurrent "sore tummy".

Healing strained tissue

Toddlers and children generally self-repair exceedingly well, but sometimes damaged tissue persists or takes a long time to recover. Sometimes certain postural habits aggravate and maintain the condition. By applying gentle corrective forces by hand, osteopathic manipulation helps stimulate healing of strained tissues. We do not use "thrusting" techniques on toddlers and children. While the detection and correction of aggravating postures may prevent recurrence.

Osteopathy is a cost effective approach to treating toddlers and children with a wide range of common problems. Improvement is often seen after the first one or two treatments, and resolution is usually seen within five treatments.
